Loving with Olivia: Pen15

So the thing that I am absolutely loving this week is the Hulu show Pen15. I literally cannot stop talking about it or suggesting it to people! So about me, I am like pretty much constantly watching TV, like pretty much as background noise while I clean, or do makeup, or cook, or like anything. So I’m constantly running through shows like nobody’s business. I honestly fall in love with people who are honest about how much TV they watch, like that is so refreshing to me. I know I should probably cut down my consumption a bit, but people who are like I hate TV/Movies drive me crazy. ANYWAY, I kept seeing ads on Instagram/everywhere for this Hulu show and I needed something new to watch and I fell in love. I watched like all ten episodes in a day… but like fully watched not just background noise-d them.

Okay, so credentials for this show! It’s executive producers are the Lonely Island- they guys behind the greatest movie- Hot Rod, as well as all the SNL digital shorts. The girls that star/produce/write it were producers for Man Seeking Woman, another super weird funny show. So certified funny people!

So basically this show is about two best friends entering Jr. High (7th Grade) in the year 2000. The portrayal of middle school girls and issues is so hilariously cringey and real I can’t even handle it. Like the conversations about if a boy is into you, making up dance routines, lying to your friend that their haircut looks good! There’s an episode where the girls have a sleepover on a school night because one girls parent’s are going out of town and they get into a fight and I feel like the freak out that was had was torn from my diary. It’s just so realistic. ALSO, the way they capture the 2000s is perfect. Like the clothing, the fads, the music. I was six in the year 2000, but my mom did daycare my entire childhood for girls older than me. I was always exposed to pop culture that was ahead of my time because of that. Like the Spice Girls were my everything, my first bike at like age 5 was a Spice Girls bike. But hey, Barney was also my everything at the same time… so… I feel like if you were really into the millennium culture or have like an older sister that was like in middle school in the 2000s you’d die at this show. But also if you were ever a middle school girl, you’re going to die as well. Enjoy and text me when you’re done watching so we can talk about it!
